About Us

Our Mission

The mission of Todas Sonrisas is to provide dental care, teach oral hygiene education, and develop simple educational materials (English and Spanish) for underprivileged children in South America.

Existing nonprofit organizations and government agencies are not addressing the issue from a youth perspective. Todas Sonrisas will use existing channels and funding sources as well as new and innovative grassroots fundraising to build the foundation of this organization. The organization will leverage the priorities, enthusiasm, and leadership of the organization and potential volunteers to create simple educational programs and materials that will be easily reproduced and distributed.

Executive Director

Patrick Nelson is currently serving as Executive Director of Todas Sonrisas. He is also its founder. He handles the day-to-day operations of the organization and is working on establishing a volunteer program, acquiring grants from other nonprofits, developing the grants program.

Board of Directors

The current Board of Directors consists of:

  • Patrick Nelson, Executive Director
  • Teresa Eyet, American Health Care Association
  • Larry Decker, Treasurer
  • Three Vacancies

The final Board of Directors will consist of 6 people:

  • three dental or health care professionals (dentists, hygienists, oral surgeons);
  • one member that has extensive fundraising experience;
  • one tax accountant;
  • one lawyer or government employee who understands the legal issues related to management of funds, grants, and other services that overlap international borders.

The operations will be led by volunteers organized into the following possible committees:

  • Planning,
  • Events,
  • Fundraising,
  • Outreach/Public Relations,
  • Partnerships,
  • Education, and
  • Governance/Legal.

General Goals

Todas Sonrisas will concentrate on fundraising for existing local programs in South America that provide dental care, developing dental hygiene programs, and coordinating volunteer opportunities for dental professionals and other interested volunteers.

Todas will work to obtain grants from national and international NGOs (USAID, Oxfam, Project Hope, Gates Foundation, etc.). We will also attempt to create a network of smaller, grassroots fundraisers that individuals can execute in their homes.

Looking Forward

By the end of the 2014, we will focus on the following activities to build the capabilities of the organization:

  • Recruit a Board of Directors;
  • Identify an attorney and accountant to provide guidance regarding legal, bookkeeping, and tax issues;
  • Begin necessary filings with the District and federal government;
  • Develop organizational bylaws;
  • Form partnerships with nonprofits and government agencies that have expertise and resources related to the Todas Sonrisas mission;
  • Create an initial budget and operating plan;
  • Develop specific requirements for grants or educational programs;
  • Develop methodology for increasing outreach to communities in need;
  • Charge an educational committee with producing an oral health program including simple English and Spanish materials.
